NFL Top Ten: Best 2009 Teams not in the 2008 Playoffs

There will be a bunch of teams in the tournament next year that aren't right now. Seven teams in the 2008 playoffs were not there in 2007. Which non-playoff teams have the best chance of making it next year? MVN's NFL Top Ten investigates:10. Dallas CowboysDallas has a lot of problems that will prevent them from significantly improving in the offseason, but you have to look at the roster right now as one that can compete for a playoff spot. Who knows whether they can improve on offense in 2009? The offensive line and the protection schemes have serious issues, and it's possible the two best receivers on the team don't even start, but Tony Romo is going to continue to be Tony Romo, and the team will have a three headed rushing attack it can lean on next year. Cable guy impresses, but is it enough? Only Al knows

At first glance, a 4-8 record as head coach of the Raiders, wouldn't seem to be enough for Tom Cable to get the 'interim' label removed from his official title. In fact, in this space we've done our share of discounting him as a viable candidate in the official Oakland Raiders coaching search. I would've named it the 'annual' coaching search, but it's more a bi-annual event than anything else. Coach Cable was quick to point out, when asked about his status, the team played .500 football over the last six games. Armed with that and the fact that he led the team for 12 games, that would mean that the team went 1-5 his first six games. This begs the question, if Cable is named the head man, what team will show up on game day?

Offseason begins: Oakland Raiders news, rumors, 2009 opponents and more

Today is the first official day of the offseason for the majority of the teams in the NFL. It is the day that many coaches are fired, and the rumor mill starts to heat up. There are already rumor swirling around Bill Parcells and the Miami Dolphins are in the playoffs after a dismal 2007. Tom Cable is not on the chopping block because his interim tag has expired, so Al Davis must comply with the "Rooney Rule" and interview at least one minority candidate before making his decision. A story circulated on ESPN.com last night that Bill Parcells could get out of his contract in Miami due to the sale of the team. Oakland was listed as one of his possible destinations. After earning a reputation early in the year for dropping games where they had a two score lead late, the Oakland Raiders flipped the script against the Tampa Bay Buccaneers and overcame a 10 point deficit to win their final game of the season. For the Raider Nation, this was a sweet victory as there was a measure of revenge in ending Jon Gruden's playoff hopes. For the Oakland Raiders team, it was a glimpse of a brighter future as younger players stepped up and made the plays needed for the Raiders to take home the win.Second year player Michael Bush was the hero of the game rushing for 177 yards and two touchdowns. And so ends the 2009 Oakland Raiders season, as they travel to Tampa Bay to face off against Jon Gruden and the Tampa Bay Buccaneers. It seems like it was just the other day we were covering the draft and whether or not "Al's Mandate is McFadden" and now the season that started with high hopes has now dissolved into yet another part of the long drought of Oakland Raider success. The Bucs are a team that is reeling, but they need the win against Oakland to have any chance at the post-season. Oakland Raiders Week 16: Ballers and Busters

Well, fool me twice. The Raiders came into this week's matchup with the Texans looking like they had given up on the season. On the other hand, the Texans, were one of the hottest teams in the NFL. Not only that, but the Raiders had never beaten the Texans and this Raiders team did not look like a team capable of shedding any back riding monkeys. So what did they do? They had an overall great game and beat the Texans decisively, of course. In the process, the Raiders had their first opening drive touchdown of the season, a FIFTH return touchdown of the season, held the Texans to under a hundred yards rushing (including the speedy Steve Slaton to just 66 yards), and looked dominant nearly the entire day. Now let's hand out the gifts to the nice and coal to the naughty....

Fantasy Football: Breakout Stars of 2008

Since many fantasy football leagues will end for this season with tonight's game, I will give you my top ten breakout players for 2008. These players were probably a bargain on draft day in most leagues, whether traditional draft or auction style, or could have been had early in the season on the waiver wire and ultimately paid nice dividends. Note: All stats are through Week 16, except for Green Bay QB Aaron Rodgers, who has yet to play his Week 16 game. 1. Michael Turner, Atlanta Falcons- Turner got a chance to start for the Falcons this year after spending his first few NFL seasons in San Diego behind LaDainian Tomlinson, and became a star. He has 1,491 rushing yards and 16 rushing touchdowns, both good for second in the NFL. They climbed into third place in the division and kept their faint playoff hopes alive. New York's Domenik Hixon impressed as a reserve. Six players have been suspended for four games, the remainder of the regular season, for violating the league's steroid policy. Hardest hit are the Vikings, who lost defensive tackles Kevin Williams and Pat Williams, two keys for the Vikes' playoff hopes. Minnesota has a one-game lead in the NFC North and will struggle to keep it without the Williams Wall to stop the run. The Williamses obtained a temporary restraining order Wednesday which allows them to practice but does not guarantee they will play on Sunday. The judge in the case is awaiting legal briefs by both sides before making a final ruling. Meanwhile, the Vikings have signed Jimmy Kennedy as an insurance policy. The Saints lost three players, running back Deuce McAllister and defensive ends Charles Grant and Will Smith, but New Orleans is in last place in their division with no realistic playoff hopes.
