2008 Giants Take Lesson From 2007 Cowboys

Since the Cowboys are no longer involved and I am tired of being upset I had to find somewhere or someone to take my frustrations out on. I can think of no one better than the Giants. The Giants and their fans make this an easy proposition. What makes it so easy is that this years version of the "New York Football Giants" are strikingly similar to last years version of the Dallas Cowboys. The best part of this though is that Giants fans do not see the similarities or in most cases see them, but since winning last years Super Bowl believe the Giants are immune to it! Follow me after the break when I take a look at the similarities>>>>>...

Learning from our Ancestors

I spent the weekend reading "Boys Will Be Boys" the Jeff Pearlman book about the ongoings of the Dallas Cowboys in the 90's. Hard to believe that all took place so long ago (20 years since Jerry bought the team). It was great remembering some of the things that took place, and hearing different things for the first time. Though I have not finished reading the entire book yet a few things come immediatly to mind that would help this Cowboys team. Unfortunately we live in the era of the salary cap and coaches and player personel cannot conduct business as they did back then. I would suggest though that our fearless leader (Wade Phillips) go back and review how Jimmy conducted business! To continue reading this story>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>...

NFL Top Ten: Best 2009 Teams not in the 2008 Playoffs

There will be a bunch of teams in the tournament next year that aren't right now.  Seven teams in the 2008 playoffs were not there in 2007.  Which non-playoff teams have the best chance of making it next year?  MVN's NFL Top Ten investigates:10. Dallas CowboysDallas has a lot of problems that will prevent them from significantly improving in the offseason, but you have to look at the roster right now as one that can compete for a playoff spot.  Who knows whether they can improve on offense in 2009?  The offensive line and the protection schemes have serious issues, and it's possible the two best receivers on the team don't even start, but Tony Romo is going to continue to be Tony Romo, and the team will have a three headed rushing attack it can lean on next year.  The defense can be the type of defense it showed...

In Jerry We No Longer Trust

Jerry Jones is a polarizing figure.  Similar to George W. Bush, Terrell Owens, and the New York Yankees, when you mention his name, you'll get a strong reaction--positive or negative--from anyone within earshot.  For many fans of the Cowboys, Jones is the only owner they've ever known.       And in Dallas, where the other pro owners are Mark Cuban and Tom Hicks, it's easy to be viewed as the best owner in town.  Yes, Jerry's a greedy, arrogant man, and getting his new $1 billion stadium partly paid for by the people of Arlington is one of the largest legal robberies of all time.  However, on the football side, he's always seemed to be good for the franchise.       He wants to win, and he spends quite a large bit of his money trying to do so.  As a sports fan, nothing is more frustrating than to see an owner close the wallet and give...

Detonating the dream: No way Bill Parcells comes to the Oakland Raiders

A lovely rumor has been floated by ESPN that Bill Parcells has an out clause with the recent sale of the Miami Dolphins, and that one of his potential landing spaces would be the Oakland Raiders. This is a dream come true for many in the Raider Nation, as it would be Al Davis stepping aside to let someone else take the reigns of the football side of the organization.Al Davis is a member of the Pro Football Hall of Fame, and deservedly so for all that he has done in his tenure running the Oakland Raiders. However, with all that he has done it is becomnig increasingly clear to the Nation that it is time for Al Davis to bring in the next generation to help him run the team, and ultimately take control.  ...

NFL Top Ten: Best Games from the 2008 Season

The regular season may not be over just yet, but it has already produced plenty of classic games.  I had the pleasure of picking ten games that might show up again on NFL Classics in the future.  All games had to be heavily competitive to be considered, but bonuses were given to games with great storylines, great endings, and really critical results.  Here are the top ten games from the first 16 weeks of the regular season:Number 10 (October 26)Giants defeat Steelers 21-14At the time of this game, whether or not the NFC had overtaken the AFC was very much in the air.  The Eagles had taken care of the Steelers at home earlier this season, but the Steelers were hosting the Giants in this one.  The Giants controlled much of the action in the first half, but the Steelers came out and scored in the second half, and led...Read more

NFL Power Rankings Week 16: Pennsylvania teams eventually rise to top

1. Tennessee Titans (12-2) The Titans hold the top spot at least one more week through the loss, but they will have to beat Pittsburgh at home without Albert Haynesworth and Kyle VandenBosch to hold it any further.  Good luck guys.2.  Philadelphia Eagles (8-5-1)The Eagles jump up to number two this week behind the strength of a third consecutive win, and the Steelers knocking off the Ravens, who beat the Eagles back when this was a team in turmoil. 3.  Pittsburgh Steelers (11-3) Do the Steelers have the greatest defense of all time?  Only a championship would validate this.  The offense apparently isn't going to assist them until the final two minutes of every game.4.  Baltimore Ravens (9-5) The Ravens aren't going to fall too far, falling victim to the "Tuck Rule curse".  They should have taken care of business in Pittsburgh, and then it wouldn't have come down to...Read more

Monday Overtime: Key losses set up Giants-Pathers, Titans-Steelers showdown

This is not the WWE where outcomes are staged as entertainment masked as sport. But, the NFL could not have set up two key games any better than key losses by the Giants and Titans yesterday.Houston Texans 13, Tennessee Titans 12Texans receiver Andre Johnson is a pretty good football player you almost never see on TV. Blame small markets and inconsistent play for that. He gave Houston football fans an emotional lift with 207 receiving yards to lead the Texans over the franchise formerly known as the Houston Oilers. The game should have been a blowout for the Titans. Instead, their entire scoring came from field goals. It was just that kind of day. So what did Titans coach Jeff Fisher do on fourth down from the Texans 32 yard line with two minutes to go in the fourth quarter? He goes for it instead of taking what might have...Read more

The NFL third-quarter review

Three quarters of the NFL regular season have been played and we head into what should be an exciting fourth quarter. Nineteen teams are in strong contention for postseason play.   The Giants, Titans, Cardinals and Broncos each have three-game leads in their divisions and are on the verge of clinching. They'll be jockeying for position in the home stretch for the best seedings.   The other four division races are a lot closer. The Steelers, Jets and Vikings each have one-game leads and the NFC South is extremely close. The Panthers and Bucs are tied with 9-3 records and will face each other Monday night, with the Falcons on their heels and only a game behind them at 8-4.   Here's a look at the current standings, remaining schedules and the remaining strengths of schedule.   AFC division leaders: Tennessee Titans (11-1) Browns, Texans, Steelers, Colts 26-22 (.542) Pittsburgh Steelers (9-3) Cowboys, Ravens,...Read more

Plaxico, the Giants and other news and notes from around the NFL

Plaxico Burress has been charged with two counts of felony possession of a weapon, following an incident in which he accidentally shot himself in a nightclub last Friday night. Burress could face incarceration for 3½ to 15 years. Even if he gets off, he's probably played his last game as a Giant.   Giants captain Antonio Pierce may be in trouble as well. He's accused of hiding the gun Burress accidentally shot himself with and Giants fans aren't happy with Pierce or with the club's decision to let him play against the Redskins.   New York may have strict gun control laws but several Giants players defended Burress. On the other hand, Burress may be an idiot for carrying an unlicensed gun into a nightclub. Here's my question, does a temporary insanity defense apply here?   The sadly ironic thing about this situation is it occurred prior to the game in which the Redskins honored...Read more

Monday Overtime: Giants, Titans close to locking up home field advantage

The New York Giants and the Tennessee Titans share many similarities starting with the team names. "Giants" and "Titans" are synonyms. The Giants and Titans are head and shoulders above all other teams in their conferences. The Giants and Titans, both 11-1, are a week or two away from locking up home field advantage throughout the playoffs.Tennessee is two games ahead of Pittsburgh by won-loss record. They trail the Steelers by half a game against AFC teams: Pittsburgh is 8-1 while Tennessee is 7-1.The Titans face two patsies and two bullies in their last four games: Cleveland, Houston, Pittsburgh and Indianapolis. Combined records for those teams: 25-24 overall, 21-15 against the AFC. Houston plays Monday night.Tennessee should crush the Browns and Texans and should have home field locked up before facing the tough Steelers and resurgent Colts. Pull that off and Jeff Fisher could be tempted to rest his players...Read more

News and notes from around the NFL

Roy Williams has more to be thankful for than most in the NFL. A month ago, before he was traded to Dallas, he was stuck in the purgatory known as Detroit. On Thanksgiving, Williams' former team, the 0-12 Lions, was shellacked by the Titans 47-10. His current team, the 8-4 Cowboys, remains in playoff contention after a 34-9 trouncing of the Seahawks.   Jim Haslett's bank account will be $20,000 lighter for cussing during a disputed play. Fined for cussing, are you kidding me? Cussing is a part of football, from Pop Warner all the way through to the NFL. The league claimed Haslett was cussing at an official; Haslett claimed he wasn't cussing the official, that he simply yelled, "get off the @#$%^&* ball."    The league also fined Patriots T Matt Light and Dolphins LB Channing Crowder $15,000 each for fighting. I'm surprised they received equal punishment since Light seemed to be the...Read more
