Time for the NFL's Rooney Rule to be rescended

Willie Brown and Rob Ryan are both assistant coaches for the Raiders. Photo by Patrick A. Patterson/TFDSsports.com

Once again, it is the offseason for the majority of the NFL. Since it is early in the offseason, the coaching carousel is spinning. Coaches have been fired, and teams are looking for replacements. The usual names are flying around as to who is going to go where. However, before a team can hire the coach they are targeting, they have to be sure to interview a "minority" candidate so they don't violate the "Rooney Rule" which results in a fine, lost draft pick, and a tongue lashing from Jesse Jackson. It was Al Davis and the Raiders that broke the "color barrier" by hiring Art Shell as their head coach in 1989. Since then, there has been a proliferation of black coaches, with some having great success like Tony Dungy with the Indianapolis Colts and others failing miserably. At this point in time, NFL owners want winners. They want the...

A fair-minded look at Kravitz

JMV of 1260 WNDE and Derek Schultz of XL 950 join us with their takes on Bob Kravitz's latest self-generated controversy.  Full disclosure for those outside the market:  Bob hosts a competing radio show in the same time slot as JMV.  My thoughts on Bob's new show are well-documented.  JMV and the boys from XL 950 were holding down the local sports-talk scene just fine before 1070 decided to crowd the market with the radio equivalent of Jar Jar and the Ewoks.      Here is JMV's perspective:  "Where do I begin?   I understand disappointment, but I think you also need to keep a level head about the entire thing.   Calling for Dungy's job is about as ridiculous as it can get.  I think recognizing that will help folks keep their sanity if you happen to browse that piece-of-crap article.  Now mind you, I like Bob, always have, but this is nothing more...

Kravitz is a mediocre man who has done poorly, and now it's time for him to go

In his time in Indianapolis, Bob Kravitz has written his fair share of stupid articles.  Today, is his crowning achievement.  For reasons known only to himself, he tries to run the greatest coach who will ever coach in Indianapolis out of town.In fairness, we'll examine his arguments.1.  The Colts have gone as far as they can go with Dungy and his staff.  Very true, Bob.  They won the Super Bowl.  They've won 12 games 6 years in a row.  That's about as far as any team can go.2.  There's a nagging sense the Colts should have won more than one Super Bowl.  I suppose this is technically correct.  They did have the best team in 2005.  Of course, you could argue they didn't in 2006 (when they won from the three seed) or 2007 (after Freeney went down) and they were a giant mirage in 2008 when Dungy's coaching, Manning's...

Stat of the Night

January 2008:  17 rushes for 50 yards.  2.94 yards per carry.  4 first downs rushing.January 2009:  20 rushes for 56 yards.  2.80 yards per carry.  5 first downs rushing. The Colts lost to the San Diego Chargers in the playoffs for the second year in a row.  In those two games the Colts have run 37 times for just 106 yards.  Remember the "old" days when the pass would set up the run and then the run would set up play action?  Reasons, not excuses.DZ COMMENTS: Bob Kravitz's report card is conveniently not functioning right now. What it said before it strangely disappeared was that he thought the line played "pretty well" other than the one sack.  He apparently doesn't actually watch football games. ...

NFL Power Rankings: Ranking the 12 Playoff Teams

Knowing the outcome of Saturday's games makes this a bit tougher to do, because I have to act like I don't know the outcomes of those games to rank the 12 teams pre playoffs.  It would be easy to put Atlanta or Indy on bottom, but I had both teams reaching the round of eight.  So, with that in mind, here's how MVN saw the Playoff Power Poll as of yesterday.1.  Pittsburgh SteelersThe Steelers never led the MVN Power Rankings in any week but they are the most battle-tested, injury resistant team in the post season.  Ben Roethlisberger had his best month in December, and figures to play in the AFC Divisional round coming off a concussion, but even if backup Byron Leftwich has to play, the Steelers might be in even better hands.2.  Tennessee TitansHard to say how effective DT Albert Haynesworth and DE Kyle Vanden Bosch will be...

Rest in Peace - 2008

After a few hours sleep, not much has changed. Gijon Robinson still hasn't blocked Dobbins.Hunter Smith's last punt still hasn't had any hang time.Tim Jennings still got grabby. The Colts still got beat by a punter. The spin doctors are already out there, writing cowardly hatchet jobs ripping the Colts character and impugning their coach.  Let me simply ask every one who watched that game:Did it look like the Colts were unprepared?  Did it look like they didn't play incredibly hard? And now the most important question:  Do you honestly think they looked like the better team?Much has/will be made of Indy's "postseason" failures.  Most of this is by simpletons who will attempt to either assuage their pain or earn their fortune by ripping on the biggest and brightest stars the Colts have.  They'll forget things like the fact that Dungy has outcoached his Pythagorean win total more than any coach in the...

MVN Previews the NFL's Wild Card Round

To preview the four games slated for this weekend's Wild Card Round of the NFL Playoffs, MVN asked a variety of bloggers who cover the teams involved to chime in with a few quick thoughts on their game and a prediction...Atlanta at Arizona:Saturday's late game marks the return to the playoffs for two teams that have been suffering from postseason drought.  The 11-5 Atlanta Falcons have not seen a week 18 game since 2004 and the 9-7 Arizona Cardinals haven't been past the regular season since 1998.  While the Cards come in as NFC West Division Champs, don't think for a second that they are the stronger team.  Limping past Seattle this past Sunday after being slaughtered by the Patriots the prior week, the Cards aren't the team to be reckoned with this Wild Card weekend.  That distinction goes to the NFC's hottest team, the Falcons.  Riding a three game...Read more

Fantasy Football: Looking Ahead to 2009-Third-Year WRs

A common theory in fantasy football is that wide receivers tend to emerge in their third NFL season.  Some recent examples include Cleveland's Braylon Edwards (2007) and Denver's Brandon Marshall (2008). With that in mind, here's a look at some notable WRs that will be in their third NFL season in 2009. 1. Calvin Johnson, Detroit Lions- Despite the disfunction in Detroit, Johnson had a terrific 2008 season.  He had 78 receptions for 1,331 yards and 12 touchdowns.  Imagine what he could do if he had consistent QB play.  The potential upside is huge. 2. Dwayne Bowe, Kansas City Chiefs- Bowe followed up a solid rookie season with 86 catches for over 1,000 yards and seven touchdowns in 2008.  If the Chiefs can find a competent QB of the future, he should continue to post nice numbers for years to come. 3. Anthony Gonzalez, Indianapolis Colts- Gonzalez had a somewhat...Read more

NFL Power Rankings Week 16: Pennsylvania teams eventually rise to top

1. Tennessee Titans (12-2) The Titans hold the top spot at least one more week through the loss, but they will have to beat Pittsburgh at home without Albert Haynesworth and Kyle VandenBosch to hold it any further.  Good luck guys.2.  Philadelphia Eagles (8-5-1)The Eagles jump up to number two this week behind the strength of a third consecutive win, and the Steelers knocking off the Ravens, who beat the Eagles back when this was a team in turmoil. 3.  Pittsburgh Steelers (11-3) Do the Steelers have the greatest defense of all time?  Only a championship would validate this.  The offense apparently isn't going to assist them until the final two minutes of every game.4.  Baltimore Ravens (9-5) The Ravens aren't going to fall too far, falling victim to the "Tuck Rule curse".  They should have taken care of business in Pittsburgh, and then it wouldn't have come down to...Read more

News and notes from around the NFL

Six players have been suspended for four games, the remainder of the regular season, for violating the league's steroid policy. Hardest hit are the Vikings, who lost defensive tackles Kevin Williams and Pat Williams, two keys for the Vikes' playoff hopes. Minnesota has a one-game lead in the NFC North and will struggle to keep it without the Williams Wall to stop the run. The Williamses obtained a temporary restraining order Wednesday which allows them to practice but does not guarantee they will play on Sunday. The judge in the case is awaiting legal briefs by both sides before making a final ruling. Meanwhile, the Vikings have signed Jimmy Kennedy as an insurance policy.   The Saints lost three players, running back Deuce McAllister and defensive ends Charles Grant and Will Smith, but New Orleans is in last place in their division with no realistic playoff hopes.    The sixth player is Texans long snapper Bryan...Read more

The NFL third-quarter review

Three quarters of the NFL regular season have been played and we head into what should be an exciting fourth quarter. Nineteen teams are in strong contention for postseason play.   The Giants, Titans, Cardinals and Broncos each have three-game leads in their divisions and are on the verge of clinching. They'll be jockeying for position in the home stretch for the best seedings.   The other four division races are a lot closer. The Steelers, Jets and Vikings each have one-game leads and the NFC South is extremely close. The Panthers and Bucs are tied with 9-3 records and will face each other Monday night, with the Falcons on their heels and only a game behind them at 8-4.   Here's a look at the current standings, remaining schedules and the remaining strengths of schedule.   AFC division leaders: Tennessee Titans (11-1) Browns, Texans, Steelers, Colts 26-22 (.542) Pittsburgh Steelers (9-3) Cowboys, Ravens,...Read more

Monday Overtime: Giants, Titans close to locking up home field advantage

The New York Giants and the Tennessee Titans share many similarities starting with the team names. "Giants" and "Titans" are synonyms. The Giants and Titans are head and shoulders above all other teams in their conferences. The Giants and Titans, both 11-1, are a week or two away from locking up home field advantage throughout the playoffs.Tennessee is two games ahead of Pittsburgh by won-loss record. They trail the Steelers by half a game against AFC teams: Pittsburgh is 8-1 while Tennessee is 7-1.The Titans face two patsies and two bullies in their last four games: Cleveland, Houston, Pittsburgh and Indianapolis. Combined records for those teams: 25-24 overall, 21-15 against the AFC. Houston plays Monday night.Tennessee should crush the Browns and Texans and should have home field locked up before facing the tough Steelers and resurgent Colts. Pull that off and Jeff Fisher could be tempted to rest his players...Read more
