Game 36 Preview, Nets vs Memphis

Here's a perfect opportunity for the Nets to extend their humble 2-game win streak at home, but most importantly, get back to .500 in the standings. Starters: Nets: Lopez, Yi, Simmons, Carter and DoolingMemphis: Gasol, Arthur, Gay, Mayo and Lowry Injuries:Nets: HarrisMemphis: Milicic Okay, maybe it's not really the perfect opportunity, because the Grizzlies have not really been push overs as of late. They have actually been playing well, just losing games in the final quarter. Main point of concern here is Gay, who has been under the radar so far this season. Sure, his production has not really been that great, but he can carry this team when he needs to. Some say that the Nets have one of the best groups of rookies in the NBA, but I do believe that Memphis beats them in that category, with Love, Mayo andGasol, these Grizzlies are definitely set for the...

On the Horizon

Here are just some of the things that I plan to write about in the coming days-weeks-months.1. Yi Jian Lian and the All-Star gameDoes Yi deserve a spot in the mid-season classic? Will he even get voted in? StateNets' take on this potentially scandalous situation. 2. The Nets of a couple of seasons ago and this year's team A look at the differences of the big 3 lead teams as compared to this present team. 3. 2010 With the possibility of being in Brooklyn for the 2010 season looking bleak, do the Nets still have a shot at Lebron? Or any of the major free agents for that matter? How about VC? Will he still be in town by then? 4. Fan Culture Does the IZOD center attendance and support really matter? How bad are the Nets being affected by this? Hopefully I can get all of these things written...

NBA Power Rankings: New Year, New Number One

Dwight Howard - Keith Allison/Flickr.com

It's been two weeks since the last edition of my power rankings, where the East's mighty trio of Boston, Cleveland and Orlando took the top three spots. But that was last year, and now that 2008 has come and gone, it's time for a new leader: the Lakers. There was plenty of repositioning elsewhere as well, including the Detroit Pistons re-entering the top-10 for the first time since mid-November.1. Los Angeles Lakers (27-5) - Technically the Lakers are still a half-game behind the Celtics for the NBA's best record, but after L.A. beat Boston pretty convincingly on Christmas Day, then downed both Utah and Portland by double digits, there's no question who should be #1.2. Cleveland Cavaliers (27-6) - LeBron couldn't rally the Cavs past the Heat last week on his birthday despite dropping 24 of his 38 in the second half, and I can forgive him for that. But...

Nets Again Win at Home, 98-80. 17-18

It was not pretty, especially in the 1st half, but what's important is the Nets won this game, behind some great 2nd half play and you could just feel that they are building up some momentum at home, which is very welcome for this team. With Kevin Martin unstoppable during the 1st half, the Kings built a 57-43 half time lead and to make matters worse, Harris called it a night in fear of aggravating his still sore hamstring.Oh no right? Considering that the Nets have not won a single game without Harris and considering that this is at home, this was starting to look like another bad loss. But, it was actually the complete opposite, behind some great defense by their second unit, specifically Boone and Dooling. The Nets came back and outscored the Kings 55-35 in the 2nd half. Add to that the offensive explosion of Yi and...

Eight-Second Violation: Tuesday, December 6, 2009

By Zach HarperMarbury Potential Hard For People To Give Up OnWhat is it about potential, skill sets, and athleticism that makes us all clamor for those who don't deserve the attention?  Is it because not even one percent of the world can accomplish the things that we see on the hardwood/parquet floor every night?  Is it because we can make anybody in NBA 2K9 a threat to be great?(First side note: It really is true that NBA 2K9 is the Matrix for anyone that we want to turn into Neo and give them free reign on the pixilated battle ground that resides in my XBOX 360. I have seen Kevin Ollie and his mustache drop 62, Steve Francis play like he actually still existed, and Earl Watson perform like Larry Bird and Isiah Thomas settled their difference, had a love child, and named him after Earl Monroe and Matt...

Game 35 Preview, Nets vs Kings

The Nets travel back home after that heart breaking loss to the heat to face the Kings, who are surely motivated by the return of Kevin Martin, who erupted for 40+ points in their last game against Indiana. Starters: Nets: Lopez, Yi, Simmons, Carter and HarrisKings: Miller, Moore, Garcia, Salmons and Udrih Injuries: Nets: Harris?Kings: Thomas and Hawes I'm not so sure if Martin will be starting, but it does not really matter, the Nets need to contain him. Also, I hope Harris will play, because the Kings do not really have anyone that can stop him. It'll be nice to see Moore back, he was a personal favorite of mine, but the Kings really did over-pay for him. How will Lopez bounce back from essentially being schooled by Wade? I know I'm a Nets fan and all that, but those blocks were sick. It's growing pains really and what...

I'm Back!

First of all, a belated Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year to everyone! I tried to get my hands on a computer throughout my time abroad, but never really had much time, but I got to check on the Nets a couple of times though. That loss to Charlotte was disappointing, but the Nets redeemed themselves the next day. SWAT getting sent to the D-League is a win-win for both parties in my book. Sean gets to play, the Nets get to see if they should keep him and this lets other teams get a look at him too. The Nets are now at 16-17 after beating the Hawks (the Nets love shooting them down huh?) the record is really great, hovering under .500 nearing the midway point, the Nets have to be feeling good, just more home wins, please. Big game tomorrow against the Heat, forgive me for...

Fantasy Player: Tayshaun Prince

In their matinee home game on New Years Eve, the Pistons toppled the New Jersey Nets by the final score of 83-75.  The main storyline of the night, no it wasn't any highlight real dunks, or amazing last second bucket, but it was Vince Carter getting ejected early in the second quarter. Vince was given his first technical after arguing an out of bounds play that he thought should have gone the otherway.  He claimed that it had gone off of Allen Iverson and then out of bounds and because of his arguing he was given a technical foul, his first.  After that Vince thought the referee Derrick Stafford said something inappropriate to him and was given his second technical for reacting. 'Vince thought the ball went off Allen (Iverson) and said something, and that's when he got a technical,' Frank said. 'That's when the official said something that Vince didn't think was appropriate and he reacted. We felt it was unjust that he got ejected.' The Pistons had a huge night  as they played shorthanded for most of the game, the Associated Press reports that the Pistons started the game with two key guys out of the line up in Rip Hamilton, and Anotonio McDyess.  But, Rasheed Wallace would soon join them on the DL due to a foot injury late in the first half of play, and the Pistons were still able to hold the Nets to a season low in points. 'When any team in the league loses three of their top six guys, things are going to change for them,' Pistons coach Michael Curry said. 'Luckily, a lot of other guys stepped up.' One player that stepped up for the Pistons last night in a injury riddled team was Tayshaun Prince, and he gets the honor of being the Pistons Fantasy Player of the Night. Tayshaun Prince had a huge night on the offensive and defensive side of the ball.  He stepped up when the team needed him most and helped them pull out the victory to help the Pistons win their fifth game in a row.  Here are his numbers: Minutes Played: 44min Points: 16 Fieldgoals and Percentage: 5/10  or 50% from the floor Freethrows and Percentage:  6/7  or 85.7%   Rebounds: 7 Assists: 5 Turnovers: 1 Another win, Congratulations Pistons. Thanks, and enjoy!Rising:Boston Celtics - Honestly, this team has been on the rise this entire season, piling up wins at a rate that we haven't seen since the 1995-96 Chicago Bulls. They now have won 18 in a row and have tied the league mark for the best start (26-2) for a team with two losses. Their recent success has been due in large part to the play of point guard Rajon Rondo. When the team needs him to score, he does it (as we saw on Sunday in the C's win...Read more

MVN's NBA Outsider presents to you the NBA's "Ballers of the Week." Since this is a team game, major bonus points are award to players who lead their teams to undeafeated records in any given week. Individual stats are nice, but it's wins and losses that matter most. The Hawks were coming off their only loss of the season at that point, a one point nail biter in Boston against the defending champs.
