Blind Faith

J.C. Romero could well enough be right when he protested that what he used was an over-the-counter, America-bought supplement. But he could well enough have been short-sighted enough not to trouble checking the packaging to determine what might have gone...

Initial Thoughts of MLB Network

Much like DirecTV's MLB Extra Innings package, the MLB Network is more baseball than one can handle. -- programwitch/Flickr.com

On January 1, Major League Baseball followed in the footsteps of the NFL and NHL by unveiling its own channel -- the MLB Network. If you don't already know what this exactly is, MLBNetwork.com's about page helps:MLB Network stands for Major League Baseball Network, which means access to more baseball than America's ever seen! This new 24-hour network delves into the world of baseball, going far beyond the field. Fans can tune in at any time for fresh perspectives, current news, the latest trade rumors, pre and post-game banter, highlights and more.Again, if you've seen the NFL or NHL networks, just picture those and think baseball. I wasn't sure if I'd receive the channel (I get the NFL network, but not the NHL), so I was surprised to see it coming in through my satellite. Obviously, I checked it out.I was impressed with my first viewing. The first show I saw...

Pat Burrell Is A Tampa Bay Ray

Perish the thought.  Pat Burrell, starting left fielder for your 2008 World Series champion Phillies, has signed a 2 year, 16 million dollar deal with the World Series losing Tampa Bay Rays. Although goodbyes have already been said, this is a sad day nonetheless.  Burrell's contract proves a couple things: 1. It's a fairly down market outside of the Yankees2. The Phillies vastly overpaid for a lesser Raul Ibanez3. One year of Burrell at 16 million could've easily been had.Burrell would've accepted arbitration no problem if this is what was out there for him.  Instead, the Phils didn't offer it and instead signed 36 year old Raul Ibanez to a three year deal.  Quality pickup if I do say so myself.  Why retain flexibility for 2010 and 2011 when you can lock yourself into the 37 and 38 year old versions of Ibanez?  The logic is flawless. Now the Rays find...

Fantasy Baseball 2009: Rays Sign OF Pat Burrell

phillymads63/Flickr.com

On Monday, the defending American League champion Tampa Bay Rays signed former Philadelphia Phillies OF Pat Burrell to a two-year, $16 million deal. Burrell should serve as the Rays' primary DH and provide a powerful right-handed bat in the middle of their lineup.  Last year for the Phillies, he had 33 HR and 86 RBI along with a .507 slugging percentage.  2008 was the fourth straight season Burrell had slugging percentage over .500. Burrell joins a potentially very good Tampa Bay lineup that includes 1B Carlos Pena, LF Carl Crawford, CF B.J. Upton and 2008 AL Rookie of the Year 3B Evan Longoria.  He looks likely to bat fifth in the order, behind Crawford, Upton, Longoria and Pena.  2B Akinori Iwamura is in the mix as well to possibly bat first or second, which would change things slightly above Burrell. But no matter what, Burrell should be in a position to be...

MLB Top 10: Baseball's Best Stories in 2008

Evan Longoria - Keith Allison/Flickr.com

We're just a few days away from ringing in 2009, so it's time to look back on the year that was 2008.  Major League Baseball provides us with tons of memories every season, but only so many can make it into a Top 10 list -- here are the Top 10 moments from this past year in Major League Baseball.  Feel free to share your own in the comments section.10. This is the game that never ends...The final All-Star Game played at Yankee Stadium lasted nearly 5 hours (4 hours, 50 minutes), and would have lasted longer if Justin Morneau wasn't able to beat Corey Hart's throw home on a sac fly by Michael Young.  The game tied the record for innings played in the Midsummer Classic, matching the 15 innings played in the 1967 affair.  With so many innings being played, a number of records fell -- the 2008...

Phillies Sign Moyer, Park; Trachsel Next?

The Phillies filled two more roster spots this week, signing 46-year-old LHP Jamie Moyer, and 35-year-old RHP Chan Ho Park. These moves help solidify the Phillies' 2001 rotation, as Moyer and Park will slot 3rd and 4th, respectively, behind 17-year-old...

Farewell Thee Pat Burrell

Farewell Pat.  You helped bring us that championship by being crucial during the first half of the season and the NLCS, had a long and fairly illustrious career in the red pinstripes, and became one of guys everyone could count on to give it their all.  The cheers and boos ebbed and flowed depending upon the output (and perceived output), but you took it all and even embraced it, and the city.  For a power hitter who could be maddeningly inconsistent from month to month, the end of the year numbers were always there, as evidenced by his OPS, EQA, OPS+, etc. etc. We're not talking just numbers though. Burrell was a firey guy, despite an undeserved reputation for a few years as just the opposite.  For those that wanted to see their players wear their emotions on their sleeves, he did it every time the Phils had a big victory. ...

Chan Ho Park Has Not Learned His Lesson

Oh, Chan Ho Park. What are we going to do with you? You would think that after parts of 15 seasons in the bigs, you would have figured out what everyone else has - that you've got a sickness, and not even cowbell is the cure. Once acquired, Giovanni Cararra Disorder simply cannot be eradicated. Named for the three-stint Dodger reliever who put up a 2.71 ERA in Chavez Ravine yet was sufficiently awful enough everywhere else to finish with a 4.69 career ERA, there is only one known cure for this debilitating disease: not leaving the Dodgers when you've proven conclusively that you will only be successful in Dodger blue. Put another way, not doing this: Righthander Chan Ho Park said in a press conference in Seoul today that he has agreed to a 1-year contract with the Phillies. According to the Korea Times, Park, 35, will have a...

Hot Stove Dishes - November 22, 2008

The latest buzz served up from baseball's Hot Stove League.  Ten of the hottest stories, moves and rumors from the past week: The Giants are the dark horse to be big time players this offseason.Out of nowhere, rumors swirled that the Giants would be inserting themselves into the CC Sabathia chase.  San Francisco already went out and signed one of the better lefty relievers on the market.  Besides Sabathia, the Giants are after Edgar Renteria and might jump into the fray on another higher end infielder to fill their middle infield needs.  If the Giants land Sabathia, they would instantly be contenders in the National League West. Mike Mussina retires! We can move on from the discussion of will Mike Mussina return to the Yankees or not for 2009 since he officially announced his retirement this week.  The 270-game winner now will be discussed based on his merits for Hall of...Read more

Being the GM: 2009 Philadelphia Phillies

MVN Awards: NL Bobby Thigpen Award - Brad Lidge

In the American League, there was a closer who put together a special season that was statistically good but not great.  In the National League, there was Brad Lidge who had a season that was not only special but amazing... perfectly amazing. Lidge's season was so good, he was awarded NL Comeback Player of the Year.  His comeback was from a '07 season that saw him post 19 saves and a 3.36 ERA in his last year in Houston before being traded to the Phillies. In Philadelphia, they waited for Lidge to slip.  He was a perfect 6-for-6 in save opportunities in April.  In May, he saved 6-of-6 again and added a win.  Seven more in June and seven consecutive in July had Lidge at a perfect 26-for-26 in save opportunities. After a rough All-Star loss and some concern because of the unusual amount of times he was asked to...Read more

Gillick deservedly goes out a winner

Joe Blanton (phillymads63/Flickr.com)

It was 1963 when Pat Gillick began what would blossom into an illustrious and lengthy front office career, leaving his pitching days behind for a job as a farm director for the Houston Astros.  Through a decade and a half of hard work, split between the Astros, Yankees, and Blue Jays organizations, Gillick ventured up the executive ranks, landing his first general managerial gig in Toronto in 1978.  And after three decades of wearing that prestigious hat for several different teams, Gillick is deservedly going out a winner.  Gillick's tenure as the general manager of the Blue Jays spanned 17 years.  He took the reins of a team that finished an abhorrent 54-107 the previous year and, eight years later, brought an AL East division title to Toronto.  From 1985 through the end of his stay in 1994, Gillick built five division winners, and two World Championship teams -- the...Read more

Tonight's finish of game 5 a chess match

wallyg/flickr.comGame 5 of the 2008 World Series already isn't your typical baseball game. And its finish is going to be unlike anything we've ever seen. Will be interesting to watch? Yes. Is it just going to feel weird? Yes -- in a good way, and bad.Granted, it was tough to watch the World Series being played in mud on Monday. That should have just never happened. It will be even tougher to see a game decided in basically three innings. I know it's a continuation of the game, but with the score tied, it will just seem like they are starting over and only playing a 21-out game. It'll be hard to adjust -- at first. But in the end, I think I'm going to like tonight's matchup. The two managers are going to find themselves in a position where each has to manage instantly. First, do you use a starter or a...Read more
