Tyler Walker

Is the mystery free agent. Nothing to right home about, kind of a let down considering I had my hopes build up on a Jerry Hairston or Erik Hinske.   No big deal, just not too exciting.   More Later...

Initial Thoughts of MLB Network

Much like DirecTV's MLB Extra Innings package, the MLB Network is more baseball than one can handle. -- programwitch/Flickr.com

On January 1, Major League Baseball followed in the footsteps of the NFL and NHL by unveiling its own channel -- the MLB Network. If you don't already know what this exactly is, MLBNetwork.com's about page helps:MLB Network stands for Major League Baseball Network, which means access to more baseball than America's ever seen! This new 24-hour network delves into the world of baseball, going far beyond the field. Fans can tune in at any time for fresh perspectives, current news, the latest trade rumors, pre and post-game banter, highlights and more.Again, if you've seen the NFL or NHL networks, just picture those and think baseball. I wasn't sure if I'd receive the channel (I get the NFL network, but not the NHL), so I was surprised to see it coming in through my satellite. Obviously, I checked it out.I was impressed with my first viewing. The first show I saw...

Burrell, Bradley and Giambi off the Market

The Mariners options for DH are slimming down fast.Burrell has signed with the Rays for two years 16 million, Bradley has signed with the Cubs for three years 30 million, and Giambi is going to sign with the A's at some point this week.If the Mariners plan not to use Clement as the DH, then we should know who they will use soon. Adam Dunn, Ken Griffey and Bobby Abreu remain on the Market and the Mariners and Dodgers are the only two teams looking to fill positions they can play. The Mariners could soon have a new player in the fold....

2008 is behind us

2008 is behind us, and with it one of the worst years in franchise history. I am going to bring back an old post, to remember exactly what we went through in 2008.12/6/07 - Mariners nab RA Dickey in the Rule 5 Draft.12/20/07 - The Mariner sign Carlos Silva to a 4 year 48 million dollar contract. They did this instead of letting Brandon Morrow or RRS start for free.1/8/08 - Mariners sign infielder Miguel Cairo to a one year deal.1/18/08 - The Mariners agree to a one year deal with HoRam1/31/08 - The Mariners sign outfielder Brad Wilkerson 2/8/08 - The Mariners complete the worst trade in Franchise history.2/13/08 - Mac gives Bedard the opening day start, without ever seeing him pitch.2/15/08 - Bedard signs a 7 million dollar one year deal.2/20/08 - McLaren states to the media and players that anything short of the Post Season would be...

Fourth Outfielder Candidates: Brad Wilkerson

Can Wilkerson rebound in 2009? Photo by P. Meidinger

Brad Wilkerson will turn 32 next season, and is attempting to rebound from one of his worst statistical seasons of his career. Wilkerson was designated for assignment by the Seattle Mariners on April 30th and signed by Toronto on May 9th after they lost Frank Thomas. A career 2.47 hitter, his numbers have not been the same since leaving the National League, where, from 2002-2005, he averaged 20 homeruns playing for the Montreal Expos and Washington Nationals. Considering his offensive ability, versatility in the outfield and first base, plus a little personal bias, I think Brad Wilkerson could be a great sign as a fourth outfielder for the Boston Red Sox in 2009.

Winter Meetings Report: Sabathia disappoints with NYC money grab; Mets dominate closers market; Big bats still available

One host couldn't hide his disdain for the plot twist CC Sabathia supplied for baseball's off-season storyline, while the other host can't get enough big market spending. In this "Winter Meetings Report," The Pitch hosts Joe Aiello and Brandon Rosage bicker about the affect Sabathia's signing has on the off-season market, as well as the business of entertainment for Major League Baseball. Discussion also moves to the New York Mets' acquisition of Francisco Rodriguez and J.J. Putz to solidify their bullpen, and the latest developments regarding Mark Teixeira and Manny Ramirez' future. Plus, the show gives some time to the Red Sox' new logos and added rumor mill sorting. Join the discussion, listen in and participate via e-mail (thepitch@mvn.com) or in the comments....Read more

On Bedard: 'There's no saving that move'

Can Bedard turn it around? -- wcamnlin/Flickr.com

In an ongoing discussion with bloggers outside of the MVN network about their respective MLB teams, I'd like to welcome Jeff Sullivan. Sullivan is the author of the Seattle Mariners blog, Lookout Landing.Alan:  What were your reasonable expectations for the Mariners this season? And at what point did things start to go wrong -- is there a moment you can pinpoint to?Jeff:  Given the active offseason they had, I went into the year with the M's pegged as a true talent -- 84-88 win team, good enough to stay interesting but not good enough to beat out the Angels in a fair fight. Lackey and Escobar getting injured certainly lifted my spirits, and while I remained forever cautious, I was guardedly optimistic. Then the baseball happened. As tempting as it is to point to the second day of the season as the turning point - the bulletproof JJ Putz got...Read more

MVN Awards: NL John Van Benschoten - Carlos Silva

peterrieke

Carlos Silva, despite being a control artist, gives up a tremendous amount of hits and needs a premier defense behind him.In one of his final moves as Seattle Mariners general manager, Bill Bavasi signed starting pitcher Silva to a four-year pact for $48 million. The signing was widely rebuked across the industry, and Silva proved why. After a 3-0, 2.79 ERA April, the wheels quickly fell off for Silva and won just one more game the remainder of the year, finishing at 4-15 with an unsightly 6.46 ERA in 28 starts encompassing 153.1 innings. He gave up an awe-inspiring 213 hits, 20 homers, 110 earned runs and whiffed just 69. I suppose one can tip his hat to his minuscule 32 walks allowed, but that doesn't mean much when batters are hammering all your pitches. Now that Bavasi is gone, new GM Jack Zduriencik has his hands full figuring out how to make...Read more
